Icecold: Planning, week 1

One hour and 20 minutes is the time I have. With my new planning methods, it should be more than enough.

This is a slightly different course from protactinium, but there are a lot of activities and content that I can try to reuse.

struggling to find a cool example of a demonstration I could use.

I asked a student from the course how they found the first tutorial. Here are some brief notes:
- The Linux commands were confusing
- Linux itself was confusing. What is Linux? Is it different from C?
- What is compiling? Why do we need to compile and why can't we just run the C file?

Essentially, it seems as if the understanding of the basics is elementary, and it would be great to review that during the tutorial. In fact, it will be essential to review it during the tutorial. If the students do not understand what C and Linux, etc. is, the information will be in a isolated, un-linked chunk and the overall learning efficiency will decrease (because less links to existing information).

I have difficulty coming up with ideas. I suppose it's difficult to come up with good ideas when you're not sure what kind of people your class will be comprised of. Perhaps that's why my week 2 protactinium class was done so much better than my week 1 protactinium class.

Tutorial:
- Enthusiastic introduction
- Introduction - we already did it
- Tutorial questions which i wouldn't cover later
- Write down unix and C on board
- What is unix (operating system story), what is C
- Unix terminal, unix exercise in pairs to build group sense
- Explore cp in more detail because that's what they're going to be using. Talk about the cp commands that were used in the lab. talk about cp rather than mv
- Cover gedit with ampersand because that's what they're going to be doing in the lab
- Piazza and what to do with it

Lab:
- Give the students license to explore the website and actively search for my email and stuff
- Make sure they have done all the tasks (piazza email etc) before getting marked off)

After:
- Write review
- Send lecturer a brief summary of the review
